Blog Assignment #1

Blog Assignment #1

When we discuss, war, its causes, and human rights abuses associated with violence, we are often led back to the question of whether violence is part of human nature. Some people believe that humans are born with a drive for war while others believe that it’s a cultural institution, not a biological instinct. Discuss whether you think that violence is a part of human nature.

Your blog posts should be short reflections. They don’t have to be really long. A few paragraphs should be sufficient. If you have trouble posting, then feel free to email your responses to me.

I actually do believe that violence is human nature. Violence is after all animal nature, and we are animals. The reason why that fact is no excuse for violence is because human beings have the ability to submit to the better knowledge we possess about violence. People, unlike lower-level animals, do not have to rely on violence to survive. So that being said, I hope the best for our future on this planet.

I agree, to an extent. I believe that to survive man has to be aggressive, meaning that they will do what is necessary to survive. But being violent for more then just basic survival is definitely something that is culturally influenced. Example: A man kills a deer for food, it is necessary for survival. A man kills another man for more land, a part in the government, or like a serial killer for entertainment, that is violent. It is going beyond instinct of survival into a self-indulgent lifestyle.

I believe that violence is part of human nature but comes with also how you are raised. When we are young we are taught to share our things with others and get along, but when one kid doesn't want to share or give back things we become protective. I can remember to this day in kindergarten i punched my best friend in the stomuch for not giving me my hot wheels back, we still laugh about it today. I grew up in a positive enviroment and only saw teenage mutant ninja turtles/GI Joes as a form of violence. I have some friends that grew up in not the best of situations that had violence occur with them or around them and they were the first to throw a fist. Some people also just grow up with fear and but getting over that they start concentrating on how to protect themselves which in some cases turns on them with big egos. Violence is apart of human nature but it is yourself who chooses to keep it in perspective and control your emotions.
